After >2 years of heavy use, this oven is still working great. Some of the text near the knob has worn off, but otherwise it looks just like new. At least for us, reliability has not been an issue, and we use it constantly. Link to full review

What’s Good about the Panasonic Prestige NN-SD997S

Technology: The Panasonic Prestige has an abundance of new technology built in, leaving you with more options in the kitchen than ever. This microwave is sensitive, it can sense the proper cook time for ingredients. Advanced Inverter Technology delivers consistent microwave energy so that foods are cooked at an even temperature instead of having foods that are cold in the center and hot on the outside. Even delicate foods can simmer without overheated edges and surfaces.

Sturdy: The Panasonic Prestige may cost more than other microwaves, but it’s certainly well-built and a worthwhile investment. The housing is durable and can either be built-in or sit on the countertop. Instead of having a delicate touchpad, the display panel features a turn knob and pop-out push buttons. With this setup, you won’t have to worry about the keypad mal-functioning. Even the rotating tray and mechanism are sturdy so that you can get the perfect rotation on all sizes of foods. You can also enjoy a large design that is perfect for whole chickens or bowls of stew, as there is adequate height and width.

Intuitive: If you’re tired of scrolling through display menus or guessing how long your food needs to cook, you’ll love what the Panasonic Prestige has to offer the modern cook. Improve your efficiency in the kitchen with this appliance. Thanks to the Inverter Technology, you won’t find any hot spots in your food, and you can even reheat a plate of food that contains meat and veggies and still have it come out perfectly warmed. The sensor technology prevents foods from overheating or burning, and basically all buttons are intuitive so that you can press them and go without the fuss.

What’s Not Good About the NN-SD997S

No Beep Reminders: If you’re someone who always seems to be forgetting that something was left in the microwave, you’ll miss hearing the reminder beeps on this appliance. Other microwaves beep every few minutes to remind you that you left your food there. This one only gives you five beeps right after the food is done cooking and that’s it. What’s interesting is that this very feature is thought to be a safety addition, as the manufacturer wants you to stay nearby the microwave when cooking, but it’s highly intuitive nature makes it easier to forget about what you put in the microwave.

Turn Knob: Many users enjoy the convenience of the turn knob. It’s more dependable than a keypad and you don’t have to manually enter in the time you need. The drawback: it’s nearly impossible to get precise temperatures when you’re dealing with seconds. For example, if a package of frozen vegetables says to heat for 4 minutes and 15 seconds, you won’t be able to do so with the knob. This inconvenience may seem small, but for the technology and cost of this appliance, you’d expect it to handle all time settings.

Opaque Window: Characteristic of many Panasonic microwave ovens, the Prestige features an opaque viewing window, which makes it hard to visually check on how foods are coming along and tempts people to open the microwave door mid-cycle, a fire hazard. As with the no beeping reminders, many believe this to be a safety feature, since there is a lot of power built into the Panasonic Prestige and it needs a dark coated window to block out radiation. Nevertheless, it’s frustrating not to be able to peak in and see how the food is cooking. This is where you really have to trust the intuitive nature of the appliance.

Overall impression of Panasonic Prestige NN-SD997S

Inverter Microwave technology a definite plus. Intuitive, powerful and easy to operate, the Panasonic Prestige is an excellent purchase for a family kitchen. It’s large and capable of cooking full meals instead of being limited to heating and reheating foods. There are a few limitations with the microwave such as that it doesn’t beep to remind you that food is in it and the viewing window is dark. However, these limitations are a small price to pay for the overall convenience and perceptiveness of this appliance that is sturdily built and will last for years. And since there aren’t any fancy buttons or digital touch panels, you don’t have to worry about these features breaking in a few short years. The Panasonic Prestige is dependable, consistent and powerful, making every meal more enjoyable to prepare.
